6/6/2024 Fishing Report
Killer Dolly fishing continues this week. It has been a few years since we have seen as Dolly fishing this good. Not only that, but the fish are bigger this year. The gusty wind here and there has made things challenging, but most tide peoples are still finding some fish. Big smolt flies have been the ticket, with a #4 chartreuse/white Stinger Clouser being the hottest fly of the season so far.
Given the early nature of most other fisheries around this year I wouldn't be surprised to see the Dollies start to show up in the freshwater a little earlier this season. When they are first in the creeks a lot of the flies that you use in the salt water will still work. I would not hesitate to throw some beads at them, however. Cowee Creek out the road is a good early place to find Dollies.
We haven't heard many reports on kings, but it is still early. The usual peak is around the 18th of this month, so don't give up yet. If you are keen on getting a sockeye on the fly, then Windfall Creek is your spot. Open only on Saturdays and Wednesdays the month of June only this fishery is pretty neat. Last year the fishing was quite good for the anglers who made the trek. If you haven't tried it before it is well worth the walk.
Lastly, if you have always wanted to try fly fishing but don't know where to start, we are having our next intro class Friday, June 14th. We have 4 spots left and cost is $20.
As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports. If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way! You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com. Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release. Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly, pinch your barbs and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.
See you on the water!
